Austin, Texas

Treatment Date:  December 2001 - Present

Treatment Locations: Austin has several small package plants that handle wastewater from a small area of service. The size of the plants range from .040 MGD to .060 MGD, but some plants are operated in combination for total flows of .180 MGD. BioCOPE is treating seven of these plants.

Problem: All of the treated plants are located in more affluent areas of town. Frequent complaints had been made about plant odors and the large sludge hauling trucks traveling on the residential streets.

Solution: The influent to each plant was treated with Biocope to control odors and reduce sludge hauling by 60% or more.  Since being treated, the plants are operating more efficiently, have better settling in the clarifiers, and require less aeration. The MLSS in the plants has been increased from 3,000 mg/L to approximately 6,000 mg/L with improved settling. The digesters are only aerated for a few hours each day, and the aeration is usually turned off for a period of sixteen hours in the evening and overnight. The water is decanted early in the morning, and there are no odors when the aeration is restarted after decanting.

Benefit: Savings have been realized from reduced electricity costs to operate the aerators in the digesters. The substantial sludge reduction has resulted in lowered sludge hauling costs that have exceeded the annual cost of treating the plants with Biocope.
